A completely autonomous Ukraine arose just late in the twentieth century, after significant stretches of progressive mastery by Poland-Lithuania, Russia, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.). Ukraine had encountered a short time of freedom in 1918-20, however parcels of western Ukraine were controlled by Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia in the period between the two World Wars, and Ukraine from that point turned out to be important for the Soviet Union as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (S.S.R.). Whenever the Soviet Union started to disentangle in 1990-91, the assembly of the Ukrainian S.S.R. announced sway (July 16, 1990) and afterward altogether autonomy (August 24, 1991), a move that was affirmed by famous endorsement in a plebiscite (December 1, 1991). With the disintegration of the U.S.S.R. in December 1991, Ukraine acquired full autonomy. The nation changed its true name to Ukraine, and it served to establish the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a relationship of nations that were previously republics of the Soviet Union.
Land
Ukraine is lined by Belarus toward the north, Russia toward the east, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea toward the south, Moldova and Romania toward the southwest, and Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland toward the west. In the far southeast, Ukraine is isolated from Russia by the Kerch Strait, which interfaces the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea.
